John Taylor of Caroline County (December 19, 1753 – August 21, 1824) was an American statesman, philosopher, and writer who served as a United States Senator from Virginia from 1792 to 1803. He was a prominent figure in the Republican Party and a leading advocate for the rights of states and the common man.

Taylor was born in Caroline County, Virginia, the son of George Taylor and Elizabeth Craven Taylor. He graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1770 and practiced law before entering politics.

Taylor served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1779 to 1781 and in the Continental Congress from 1779 to 1780. He was a strong supporter of the American Revolution and fought against the British at the Battle of Yorktown.

After the war, Taylor served in the Virginia House of Delegates again from 1782 to 1792. He was a leading advocate for the ratification of the United States Constitution, but he later became critical of the new government.

In 1792, Taylor was elected to the United States Senate, where he served until 1803. He was a strong critic of the Federalist Party and supported Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in their efforts to strengthen the Republican Party.

Taylor was a prolific writer, and his works on politics and agriculture were widely read and influential. His most famous work, "Arator", was published in 1818 and advocated for the rights of farmers and the importance of agriculture to the American economy.

Taylor was a complex and controversial figure. He was a strong advocate for states' rights, but he also believed in the importance of a strong national government. He was a harsh critic of slavery, but he owned slaves himself.
